The city was named after the headland of Dana Point, which was in turn named for Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of Two
Years Before the Mast, which included a description of the area. Although Dana describes the anchorage as poor, it is
the best available in the vicinity, and there is a developed harbor. This area is designated California Historical Landmark #189.
Dana Point Harbor provides slips and mooring for over 2,500 boats along with over 50 specialty shops and restaurants. The
Harbor attracts thousands of visitors annually for shopping, sportfishing, walking, bicycling, parasailing and a host of
recreational activities. The Dana Point Harbor is also considered the gateway to Doheny State Park, one of California’s most
popular beach facilities. The 62-acre State Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming, surfing, bicycling, tide pool exploration
and more.
